This view shows the Memorial Arch in Hartford, Connecticut, a masonry gateway built to honor local soldiers and sailors, with a carved emblem bearing the Latin phrase "Pos Nubila Phoebus," roughly "after clouds, sunshine." Because the arch spans the roadway, it also reads as a kind of bridge, which is why the catalog lists both subjects. The photograph is a c1905 glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns and landmarks in the decades around 1900 and sold views for postcards and travel books. Its archival record notes a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, so the negative has passed through more than one collection before reaching the Library of Congress.
