This 1871 map carries a German title, "Die amerikanische Staats-Domäne," which translates roughly as "the American state domain," and it was aimed at readers who would have known the region only from accounts and rumor. It appeared just as the Yellowstone country was being surveyed and described in print, the year before Congress set the area aside in 1872 as the first national park. The geyser insets show the thermal features that drew the most attention in those early reports, so the sheet works as both a navigational guide and a promotional image of the region's wonders. Look closely at how the blank spaces are handled, since they show how little of the interior had been mapped at the time.
