Joseph Pennell turned his etching and drypoint needle on a crowd of commuters rather than on the building alone, which sets this sheet apart from the architectural views he is better known for. The catalog title names Philadelphia, but the subject headings place the scene in New York's Pennsylvania Station, the Beaux-Arts terminal that opened in 1910 and was demolished in the early 1960s. Dated 1919, the print captures the daily rush of travelers moving through the station's large waiting rooms and concourses in the years when it was one of the city's most celebrated public spaces. The pencil signature on the sheet adds to its interest for anyone studying Pennell's work.
