Calvin and Grace Coolidge are shown arriving at the White House on August 21, 1923, less than three weeks after he took the oath of office as president. He had succeeded to the office on August 3 following the death of Warren G. Harding, so this is an early image of a presidency that began under unusual circumstances. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio whose glass negatives documented the capital's officials and events in the 1920s. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been verified, and the glass shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging coatings.
