A portrait of an unidentified woman, dated 1840, that survives as a daguerreotype, one of the earliest practical photographic processes. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-plated copper sheets polished to a mirror finish and sensitized with iodine and bromine vapors, then developed over heated mercury. Each plate is a single, unique image, so the sitter's expression and the soft tonal range visible in the face are the work of one exposure, which often lasted several minutes in these early years. Because her name was never recorded, the portrait stands as an example of how the process was used to capture ordinary people as well as the prominent.
