Few photographs from the early 1930s capture the Capitol at night with a storm overhead, and this 1931 print is one of them. The record, from the Copyright Office collection, describes a nighttime view of the building with a bolt of lightning striking nearby. Its maker's name is not given in the record. At the time, the Capitol's white dome and wings were a familiar symbol of the federal government, and night views like this one were often made to document the building's appearance in different conditions. Lightning in the frame adds a dramatic note that daylight pictures of the building rarely show.
