Here the Capitol serves as a trademark rather than a civic portrait. The Spanish wording names a tobacco factory in the Vuelta de Abajo, the western Cuban district in Pinar del Rio long prized for its premium leaf, so this lithograph was printed to decorate a cigar box label for an export product. Around 1868, the Capitol's cast-iron dome had recently been completed, and American and European buyers would have recognized the building at a glance. Labels like this one show how manufacturers borrowed national landmarks to lend prestige to goods sold far from where they were made.
