Rather than picturing the building itself, this hand-colored lithograph is a commercial label that borrows the Capitol's image to sell paint. The Nassau White Lead and Color Works of New York ground its white lead in pure linseed oil and marketed it as Capitol White Lead, tying an everyday product to the nation's most recognizable building. Dating to about 1866, the label appeared while the Capitol's dome was being finished and Washington was rebuilding after the Civil War. Hand coloring on lithographed labels like this one was a common way to catch a buyer's eye on crowded shelves.
