Shaded in an alcove at ground level on the Capitol's west front, a woman and several children gather at a fountain in this wood engraving. One boy has ducked his head beneath the spout, a playful detail that gives the scene its ease. H. Velton's engraving was published in *State and Society in Washington* in 1878, when the Capitol grounds drew both residents and visitors. The title, "The Capitol Spring," makes the water the center of the scene.
