George H. W. Bush took the oath of office on the west front of the U.S. Capitol on January 20, 1989, and this color print captures that open-air ceremony from the crowd-filled grounds below the building. The west front was the traditional stage for presidential inaugurations, and its broad steps and terraces drew large audiences, which the subject headings for this record reflect. Bush had served as vice president under Ronald Reagan for eight years before winning the 1988 election. Because the photograph comes from the Architect of the Capitol's collection, it also documents the building itself as the backdrop to a peaceful transfer of power.
