Market Street near Sixth Street in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, is the setting for this 1934 ink drawing of the Arcadia theater. Movie houses of the 1930s were among the most visited buildings in American cities, offering an affordable night out during the Depression, and many combined a large auditorium with a street-level marquee and storefronts. The drawing shows how the theater fit into the commercial streetscape of its corner. Its hand-inked medium reflects the drafting practices of the period, when architects and engineers recorded buildings by hand.
