Mucha's tall, two-sheet poster for Sarah Bernhardt's *La Dame aux camélias* stands out for its narrow, vertical format, which suits the slender figure of the actress and the flowers that give the play its name. The sheet was printed by F. Champenois in Paris, and it advertised a production at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, the house where Bernhardt was the star and Mucha's most important patron. Alexandre Dumas fils's story of Marguerite Gautier, a Parisian courtesan who dies of consumption, was one of the actress's signature roles, and Mucha's decorative style helped make such posters a fashionable part of city life.
