Few Manhattan movie houses of the early 1920s drew as much attention as the Capitol theater on Broadway, which opened in 1919 near Times Square. Under Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel, it paired feature films with lavish stage presentations and a full orchestra, turning a night at the movies into a complete evening of entertainment. This c1920 photograph came from American Studio of New York, a commercial studio that registered its work for copyright. Its subject headings point to both the theater and the city life gathered around it, when moving pictures were becoming the most popular amusement in the city.
