The engraving shows the Indiana State House in Indianapolis, the building that housed the state government when this view appeared in Robert Sears's *Pictorial Description of the United States* in 1860. Indianapolis had become the state capital in 1825, after lawmakers chose a site in the middle of the state, and the first State House was finished in the early 1830s. Sears's book pairs such city and building views with short written descriptions, so this print reflects how a mid-century reader would have seen the young capital.
