Seen from the southwest, this stereograph shows the theater of Dionysos on the south slope of the Acropolis, where the stone seating curves down toward the stage ruins. The theater was the home of the City Dionysia, the festival in honor of the god Dionysos, and it was here that many plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides were first staged. Underwood & Underwood issued cards like this one around 1907 for home stereoscope viewers, so the two slightly offset images combine into a single view with real depth, a popular way for American families to visit classical sites they would never see in person.
