Hermonthis, the ancient town now called Armant, lies on the Nile south of Thebes and was once a center for the worship of Montu, a falcon-headed war god. David Roberts, the Scottish painter who had traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, drew the scene on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those sketches into color lithographs. This plate comes from the second volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in parts by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Its value lies in recording the ruins as they looked to European viewers in the 1830s, before much of the site was excavated.
