Chartres Street, one of the oldest thoroughfares in the French Quarter, is the subject of this c1906 view, a glass dry plate negative made for the Detroit Publishing Company. The street was laid out during the French colonial period in the early eighteenth century, and by the early 1900s it ran through a dense mix of shops, offices and older Creole buildings. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of American towns and scenery, made this image on an 8 x 10 inch plate, a format prized for its sharp detail, which lets viewers study the storefronts and street life of the period.
