Few pictures in this set name a particular community's gathering place as plainly as this one, which records an Italian headquarters on Madison Street in New Orleans around 1906. The title doesn't say which society, business or organization occupied the building, so its exact purpose is left to the viewer's guess. Italian immigrants, many from Sicily, formed a large part of the city's population in these decades, working on the docks, in produce and in small trades, and such halls often offered mutual aid, social life and a sense of home. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large glass negatives documented American streets and businesses for commercial use in the early twentieth century.
