The caption, "Luther. And he started non-violent demonstrations!", names the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was killed in April 1968, so this drawing looks back on his work about a year later. Brumsic Brandon Jr. made it as a fourth panel in a comic series, signed in the frame, and gave it to the Library of Congress. Its porous point pen linework and tonal film overlay over pencil were common methods for newspaper and magazine comics of the late 1960s, when artists used adhesive screens to add gray shading that printed cleanly. The drawing shows how comics of that period tried to explain the civil rights movement to young readers.
