Krazy Kat is one of the few comic strips in this gallery that draws its humor from poetry and dialect as much as from slapstick. George Herriman created the strip, which ran in Hearst newspapers from 1913 until his death in 1944, and its title character, a gentle cat who mistakes a brick thrown by a mouse for a token of love, often drifts into lyrical moods. This original drawing, dated 1917 and made in ink over pencil with areas scraped out for highlights, shows the cat singing beneath a night sky of moon and stars. Herriman's dreamy, shifting backgrounds, which often turned the desert of Coconino County into a stage for romance, are worth noticing here.
