The panel's caption, "They're off! Gosh Pat!", sets a boy's excitement against a sly line about "more to this pirate stuff than we thought," and it shows the tone Milton Caniff brought to *Terry and the Pirates* when the strip began in 1934. Caniff drew this original in India ink and blue pencil over graphite, then scraped away areas of ink and pasted in corrections, a method that left the work's construction visible. Its wide, low format suits the adventure's sweeping boats and waterfronts. The record dates it to November 3, 1934, only weeks after the strip's debut, when Caniff was still shaping the characters and the voyage that would carry Terry Lee across Asia.
