A bull in uniform, under a slogan that plays on the name of a beef extract, sets this 1915 lithograph apart from other recruiting posters of the period. The caption, "British to the backbone," and the line "My place is at the front" turn the familiar Bovril advertising character into a volunteer answering the call to enlist. Britain relied on voluntary enlistment until conscription began in 1916, and posters like this one used humor and familiar brands to reach men who might otherwise ignore a plain appeal to serve.
