A kangaroo squares off with a human opponent in the ring, its title line accusing the other figure of a foul, and that reversal of the usual boxing matchup gives the drawing its joke. Executed in India ink over pencil with blue wash, gouache, and white highlights on bristol board, it was published on April 30, 1932, in the early years of the Depression, when cartoonists often used animals to poke fun at everyday disputes and human quarrels. Boxing was a favorite subject of the 1930s, and the rules, fouls, and officiating gave artists an easy setup for gentle satire. The faint pencil layer beneath the inked lines shows how the artist planned the composition before committing to the final outlines.
