Few holiday scenes from the Civil War name a general as directly as this one, which identifies Gen. Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born commander of the Irish Brigade. That brigade, made up largely of Irish immigrants and their sons, had suffered heavy losses at Fredericksburg in December 1862, and camp observances of St. Patrick's Day gave its men a chance to keep their identity alive during the war. The grandstand in the sketch suggests a built spectator area for the day's entertainments, with officers and troops gathered to watch. Drawn in pencil and dated March 17, 1863, it offers a quick glimpse of how soldiers marked the holiday in the field.
