A pencil drawing titled "The steeple chase" shows Gen. Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born commander of the Union army's Irish Brigade, in a playful scene from St. Patrick's Day in camp. Dated March 17, 1863, it reflects the soldiers' habit of marking the holiday with sports and mock contests. Meagher had been a nationalist exile before the war, and by early 1863 his brigade had suffered heavy losses at Fredericksburg, so the lighthearted sketch offers a glimpse of morale in winter quarters. It is signed only with the initials "EF," and the record does not identify the artist.
