Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born general who led the Irish Brigade in the Union army, is the figure singled out in this pencil drawing of a St. Patrick's Day mule race held in camp on March 17, 1863. Irish soldiers marked the feast day with games, music and drink wherever their units were stationed, and Meagher's brigade was then encamped in Virginia after heavy losses at Fredericksburg the previous December. The sketch is a light, comic record of camp life, and the race shows that Irish units still kept the holiday in the middle of the war.
