Irish-American communities have marked St. Patrick's Day with parades, music, and green finery since the eighteenth century, and this picture belongs to that long tradition of public celebration. The parades grew out of the large Irish immigration of the nineteenth century, when the holiday became a way for people far from home to assert their pride and their place in American cities. Crowds, banners, and the color green turned the saint's feast day into a visible expression of community. Look closely at the details of the street scene for the signs of that civic energy.
