Here the general is Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born commander of the Irish Brigade in the Union army, shown handing out prizes at a St. Patrick's Day event in camp in March 1863. Meagher had led the Young Ireland rising of 1848, was transported to Tasmania, and escaped to America, where he became a brigadier general during the Civil War. The pencil sketch, dated March 17, 1863, shows how soldiers far from home kept their homeland's holiday alive with contests and awards. Such celebrations gave the brigade's largely Irish-born ranks a moment of camaraderie during a hard winter on the Virginia front.
