Sketched in pencil, this scene from the Union army is dated to St. Patrick's Day 1863, and its record names General Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish-born commander of the Irish Brigade. Meagher, a former Young Irelander exiled after the failed 1848 uprising, had led his largely Irish-American regiments at Fredericksburg only three months earlier. Camp observances of the day often combined patriotic toasts with athletic contests, and the title's "jumping the ditch" suggests one such test of nerve. The artist is recorded only as E.F., so the drawing's exact purpose remains unclear.
