Sergei Rachmaninoff, the Russian composer and pianist, is the subject of this glass negative, which the Library of Congress holds within the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, performers and current events from the early 1900s through the 1920s, so this portrait belongs to that busy commercial trade. Rachmaninoff was among the most celebrated pianists of his day, touring the United States widely after he settled here in 1918. The record gives no firm date, and the title itself is unverified, so the sitter's identity is best taken as the agency's own label.
