The record gives only a name, J.W. Harreld, which the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, so the identification is unverified. The name matches John W. Harreld, an Oklahoma Republican who served in the U.S. Senate in the 1920s, but the record does not show the date or occasion of the portrait. The picture is one of many glass negatives from George Grantham Bain's New York agency, which sent news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s through the 1920s. Those plates were the standard format for news work of that era, and they preserve how public officials were photographed for the press.
