The record for this glass negative gives only the name "Sam. De Witt," and the note says even that title comes from unverified information on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter and the occasion remain unconfirmed. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and public figures. Its glass plates, made in the early twentieth century, document much of that period's public life, and the caption cards that traveled with them are often the only written link to a picture's subject.
