The caption gives this glass negative's subject only as B.B. Comer, a name the Bain News Service recorded without full verification. The most likely match is Braxton Bragg Comer, the Alabama businessman who served as governor from 1907 to 1911 and returned to the office in the late 1920s. Bain's agency sold photographs of public figures and newsworthy people to New York newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s, so this portrait belongs to that busy period of news photography. Glass plates like this one record fine tonal detail that is easy to lose in later reproductions.
