The caption on this glass negative reads "Rach'off," a shorthand that the Bain News Service apparently used for the Russian composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff, though the record notes that the identification is unverified. Rachmaninoff toured the United States as a pianist from 1909 and settled there after leaving Russia in 1918, so the agency's New York files would have captured him often during those years. Bain supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of performers, politicians and other public figures, and its glass negatives remain a valuable record of early twentieth-century American celebrity.
