Rather than a view of the land, this 1990 trail map charts the network of paths crossing Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the North Carolina and Tennessee border. Congress authorized the park in 1934, and it was formally dedicated in 1940, protecting some of the oldest mountains in the Appalachians. The park maintains roughly 800 miles of trails, and maps like this one helped hikers plan routes to backcountry campsites, waterfalls, and the crest of the Appalachian Trail, which follows the ridgeline through the park. Notice how the symbols for elevation and trail junctions do the work that scenery does in other pictures.
