Captured in 1944, this print documents a graduation ceremony at Columbia University in Morningside Heights, one of the oldest institutions in New York, chartered in 1754 as King's College. The war shaped campus life that year. Many students were on accelerated schedules or preparing for military service, and commencement often carried a sober tone as families and faculty marked the achievements of those heading into uncertain times. The photograph captures a moment when a traditional academic ritual continued despite the wider upheaval of the period.
