The building named on this card is the Pulitzer School of Journalism at Columbia University, a school founded through a bequest from the newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, who died in 1911. Its campus home in Morningside Heights reflected the era's growing belief that reporting and editing deserved formal training in a university setting. The halftone process used to print it turned photographs into dots of varying size, so it could appear on the printed page alongside text. The card gives no date, so the picture is best read as a record of the school's early years, when Columbia's journalism program was still taking shape.
