Rows of stuffed teddy bears sit on a worktable in what the title suggests is a New York factory, a sign of how quickly the toy had become a mass-produced American product by 1915. The name came from Theodore Roosevelt, whose 1902 refusal to shoot a captive bear on a Mississippi hunt inspired a Brooklyn shopkeeper to sell a plush bear of his own. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news photo service's files, so it was probably taken as a press picture of the local toy trade.
