Aberystwyth, the seaside town on Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales, is shown here from its sands, where holidaymakers gathered in the late Victorian years as the railway brought visitors to the resort. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that used several lithographic stones to reproduce a photograph in color. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in the United States, and this example is catalogued as print no. 10523 in its 1905 listing. The bright, layered color makes it a useful record of how a British seaside town presented itself to visitors at the turn of the century.
