A February 21, 1908 banquet in Chicago, given by the Aeronautique Club of Chicago for the Federation of American Aero Clubs, is the subject here. The gathering was the federation's first annual dinner, held as the young sport of flight was drawing public attention after the Wright brothers' powered flights of 1903 and the pioneering exhibitions that followed. The print was made by the Geo. R. Lawrence Company, a Chicago firm known for large group photographs of banquets and civic events, and it was registered for copyright that same month. Its interest lies in the group itself: a record of the men who organized early American aviation clubs, posed for a camera at a moment when the field was still new.
