Manzanita, a Spanish name for shrubs and small trees of the genus *Arctostaphylos*, is the subject of this color lithograph, the third plate in the botany volume of the Pacific Railroad surveys. Army topographical engineers carried out those surveys in the early 1850s to find practical routes for a transcontinental railroad, and naturalists collected plants along the way. Illustrations like this one helped scientists and officials recognize western species and judge the region's resources. The plate was printed as part of a House executive document from the 33rd Congress, which places it within government-sponsored natural history of the period.
