This poster promotes the recreation centers in Sioux City, Iowa, named on its face as East High, West Junior, North Junior, and Woodrow Wilson, with an arts and crafts program. It was printed in silkscreen in 1936 under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which hired artists to make public posters during the Depression. Such posters announced free or low-cost community activities at a time when many families had little money for entertainment, and the local schools served as gathering places for young people and adults. The back of the board bears a 1940 date stamp, a reminder that these posters were often reused or stored for years after they were first displayed.
