A meeting between President Herbert Hoover and members of the Delta Sigma Nu fraternity is the subject here, dated August 8, 1929, several months into Hoover's term in the White House. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials, visitors and public events in the early twentieth century, made the original, a glass negative that came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift. Glass plates like this were common then but fragile, and the streaks and blemishes visible in the image come from natural deterioration of the original coatings. The record gives only the group's name for the occasion, so the plate itself is the main source for what the moment looked like.
