A glass negative dated August 8, 1929, pairs President Herbert Hoover with the Delta Sigma Nu fraternity, though the record does not say what brought them together. Hoover had taken office in March 1929, and the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials and visitors in the capital, made many pictures like this during those years. The title comes from data the studio wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the occasion is best read with some caution. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
