Hoover's sitting with the Isaac Walton League, on July 17, 1929, places the newly inaugurated president before a conservation group named for Izaak Walton, the 17th-century author of *The Compleat Angler*. The League, founded in 1922, promoted the protection of fish, game, and natural lands, and its members were largely anglers and hunters. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public events in the 1910s and 1920s. Its glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating, which is typical of surviving plates from that era.
