The Arkansas River, cutting through the rock walls west of present-day Cañon City, Colorado, is the subject here, and the view looks east as the water leaves the mountains and the land opens onto the plains. In 1874, the Arkansas canyon was already drawing tourists by rail and stage, and photographers sold stereograph cards like this one so viewers at home could see the scenery in apparent depth through a hand viewer. This card is No. 137 in the Colorado Views series, issued by the publisher William I. Marshall, whose cards helped shape how eastern audiences pictured the West's dramatic terrain.
