The gatehouse in this view is the brick, arched entrance of the Evergreen Cemetery on Cemetery Hill, with a figure standing at the right edge of the frame that gives a sense of scale. The hill became a key position on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, when Union forces held the high ground after fierce fighting on the afternoon and evening. Cemetery Hill's stone and brick structures were used as lookout and signal points during the battle, and the cemetery grounds were later reshaped into the Soldiers' National Cemetery. Look at the arch and the masonry for the modest, practical character of a mid-nineteenth-century cemetery entrance.
