A carte de visite dated January 8, 1864, this albumen print was issued from Mathew Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries in New York. The small card format, roughly 10 by 6 centimeters, was built to be collected and shared, and Americans bought Lincoln portraits in large numbers during the Civil War. The picture was made in the winter before the 1864 presidential election, when Lincoln was seeking a second term while the country was still at war.
