Thomas Coleman du Pont, the Delaware industrialist and politician, sits for this July 1921 portrait, which was made as a glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that supplied news and portrait pictures to newspapers in the 1910s and 1920s, produced many images of officials and public figures like him. Du Pont was a senator from Delaware in the early 1920s, and the negative captures the formal studio style of the period. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
