Cyrenus Cole, an Iowa newspaperman and writer, is the subject of this portrait, which the National Photo Company likely made in Washington in the early 1920s. Cole was best known for his writing about his home state, including a widely read history of Iowa published around 1921. The National Photo Company was a commercial studio that photographed government officials, politicians and other public figures, so the picture reflects the era's habit of documenting notable men in formal portraits. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which give the image a faintly weathered look.
